Interview: Fripic Bounce from Subcouds

Who is involved in Subcouds? We’re two, myself and Rickard Berglof. Lately we’ve been working a lot on our side-projects but when we work together I usually do the programming and Rickard does the arrangement and effect-adding part.
Where are you from? Sweden. From the university town Uppsala, 70 kilometers north of Stockholm. It’s a small town with a lot of students. A very nice place to grow up in with thickly wooded surroundings and a lot of old, historically important, buildings and places. There is also an exciting nightlife - if you like Bruce Springsteen or Swedish r**k-stars like Tomas Ledin!

When, where, why and how did the group start? A mutual friend brought us together and we immediately started to talk about music. After a couple of drinks we decided to start a group. Nobody believed us but, well, we did. Rickard then had an Amiga computer and I had just bought a sampler. With that equipment we tried to create some kind of melodious acid-house. Ehh… don’t ask me how that sounds! Then we managed to persuade someone to lend us money and started on our glorious career as pop-stars.In 1992 we changed our name from “Digital Perfume” to “Subcodes”. Then my younger sister, Mari, made us a poster. Unfortunately she misspelled our new name. We then decided to change it to what she had written, namely “Subcouds”. It’s pronounced as “subclouds” but without the “l”.

When and how did you got involved with psychedelic trance for the first time? Just let me state one important thing before answering that. Sweden is still a “rock-country”. What I mean by this is that the scene here changes extremely sloooooowly. Many DJ’s seem to be afraid to play anything but the old well-tried floorfillers. I just wanted to say that. I hope it will provoke someone in a positive way! Anyway, in 1992 a record shop-owner opened a club called “Unity”, here in Uppsala, where they played imported stuff. Mainly trance and progressive-house. We got hooked on the “new” sound directly and we’ve been faithful “ravers” ever since.
