The One You Missed

March 17th, 2008

The name of this mix, The One You Missed, is sort’ve a tongue-in-cheek double-message to all of our friends that were at Typhoon last weekend. We prepared a 3-hour blend to pump everyone up for the surf session and here is an edited part of it with some of the tracks that were featured. It is particularly made with surfing in mind, and a wide range of surfers and interests, but I hope everybody can get into it… The artists in order of playlist are: Peter Laughner, The Presets, Gossip, LCD Soundsystem, The Streets, Simian Mobile Disko, Vicarious Bliss’s remix of a Yuksek song, Shir Khan’s remix of a tune by Bonde do Role, Trans Am, Kreeps, The Goons of Doom, Pink Holes, Syclops, Sally Shapiro, and Cornelius. If you have any questions about particular tracks, let me know…

Peter Laughner - Hesitation Blues
What’s more appropriate to a South Florida surfer than the hesitation blues. Funny thing is, usually you have to wait out in the Typhoon Lagoon parking lot while they close the park before you can get in for some pool surfing. Then its the hesitation blues baby as you take off and “try not to hit the wall” when you drop into chlorinated waist-high, turn-your-hair-green, and burn-yer-eyes bliss for a couple of hours. Hey, trust me, for simple kicks its a good time with buddies over there.

Anyway, this tune is by Peter Laughner (of course I had to open with a Cleveland native… [[I throw a claim out to my north coast Viking clan]]). You may have known Laughner from Rocket from the Tombs or Pere Ubu… but this is a Wolverines tune. Son-of-a-bitch died too young at 24. The “hit the wall” thing is sort’ve bullshit, by the way.

The Presets - The Girl and the Sea
Pretty straightforward tune from the Oz pop scene. You may recognize this tune from Qucksilver’s Young Guns II.

Gossip - Eyes Open
Beth Ditto’s got some pipes and if you know your rock-n-roll ass from a pipe straw you should love this (what the fuck is a pipe straw? My point exactly…). I learned about this group when Standing in the Way of Control came out in 2006. I’ll admit it, when I heard the music and caught that lyric: “The harder that I try I know, the harder I push you away” I had visions of my first off-the-top cutback. What? So sue me, fuckos…

LCD Soundsystem- North American Scum
This song is a NY version of the classic American tradition: Iggy Pop, Rocky,Saturday Night Fever,Buffalo 66,Napolean Dynamite, etc., etc., the list goes on… Basically the testament: Yeah, American losers suck ass but we still rock yer fuckin socks…

The Streets - Let’s Push Things Forward
Or maybe let’s push things back to 2002… Some classic dubby London pub pop. Booyah!

Simian Mobile Disco - Believe

Vicarious Bliss - Little Dirty Trip
Ed Banger releases mainstay and working-whore for LadyTron and other majors.
