Frans Martins at Square Room
November 6th, 2007
The Square Room series of free parties has featured primarily minimal techno so far. The idea is to present art and local djs in the space, which is probably about 50 square feet, along with as much sound as can be pulled together. The room is behind Templo in South Beach. Find it by making a left on 5th Avenue at Wash., then taking the first right down the one-way alley that heads toward that scooter rental place. There is a public parking garage there, and you’ll notice a back alley just before the garage entrance. To the left, you’ll usually see the crowd over-flowing into the back alley, since the place is pretty small.

So far, it seems Sobebeats is using the space for small, middle-of-the-road parties in between their larger warehouse one-offs. In the few previous editions of Square Room, they have featured primarily local djs playing minimal techno and have always had someone displaying art or photos on the red walls, too.

Expect the party to be mainly about bullshitting with the rest of the people and dancing, mostly with South Americans/Caribbeans who want minimal, electro techno, as has become the Sobebeats staple for smaller events. There is no bar in the room, and you have to go down a hallway to the front of the club, which usually is hosting really crazy live Colombian vallenato or Latin American disco hits and pop music, in order to get a drink. Not a bad thing really, as the front of the place is usually packed with people going nuts. In fact, the two crowds mingle a bit which is okay, even though they are almost totally different.
